Kaskazini Rhodesian Ridgebacks Welcome to our website. We hope you enjoy your visit! I first fell in love with the Rhodesian Ridgeback when I was working in Zimbabwe in the early 1980's. I lived in a house with a family who had two ridgebacks and I remember them being strong, powerful dogs able to do the job they were originally bred to do and fiercely loyal to their family. I vowed then, that I would, one day have my own Ridgeback. In 1986 I acquired my first Ridgeback and we have shared our home with one or more ever since. I currently own four dogs, Ruby, Brewster, Kasidi and Raiza. Last year we made the decision to move to the United States and in September we arrived at our new home in Upstate New York (see location map here). We own 21 acres of land for our dogs to run around in and we border woods that go on forever, so we really have wonderful facilities to raise our dogs. I intend to stick with the British/European lines in my breeding programme as I feel they truly reflect the Rhodesian Ridgeback. Ruby and Dempsey - Brewsters parents. When we made the decision to mate with Ruby it was important for us to find a dog who had similar characteristics (type). We had met Dempsey on several occasions at club shows and social events in Scotland and were impressed by his similarities to Ruby. He is a strong, powerfully built dog but with a lovely soft expression and a gentle nature to match. We thought he had beautiful conformation and his movement displayed real drive and purpose. His pedigree revealed that they were related through grandparents. We have successfully raised two litters from Ruby and Dempsey and Dempsey has gone on to be a very successful stud dog. He has recently sired a very promising litter in Sweden. Photographs of their progeny can be seen on my website (Brewster, Phoenix and Boston are from these litters) and on the Kikeba website which I have close affiliation with and will continue to do so in the future. Brewster and Kasidi - the parents to be! We kept back Brewster from their first litter. He represented all the characteristics that we believed were important to us and represented the lines we are trying to breed to. Kasidi is from the Kiromol Kennel bred by Liz and Paul Storey and is so typical of the beautiful dogs they breed. Like all Kiromol dogs she effortlessly displays wonderful free striding movement, something which sadly, I feel is absent in a lot of the dogs today. Kasidi mated with Brewster shortly after our arrival in the United States and is due to have her first litter of puppies towards the end of November 2005. One of my favourite dogs in the UK right now is Champion Diamondridge Donatello and I am delighted that Lindsey and Kelvin Barnes of the Diamondridge Kennel allowed us to bring to the United States, our puppy Raiza “Diamondridge Delaware at Kaskazini” who is out of Donny and Champion Diamondridge De Ja Vu. For anyone considering purchasing a Rhodesian Ridgeback puppy I would strongly recommend that you do as much research as you can as these are not easy dogs to own. They are free spirited, strong willed hounds who need lots of exercise and free running. They are not the most obedient of dogs. Exercise them regularly and they are very easy to live with and will even show an inclination towards laziness. They are very sociable hounds in their own family group and will not benefit from being kennelled or being tied up for long periods. There are various sites that will give you the history of this hound and I will not repeat it here. I can vouch though, that once you own a Rhodesian Ridgeback, you will never want to own another type of dog.
